Building-I investigates how a time-based digital artwork can persist beyond technological obsolescence through a new model of preservation.
I do not own a home—
but I have a building.
Building-I is not a physical architecture, but a technological ecosystem: a structure inhabited by individual Digital Beings that exist within obsolete displays and computational systems.
Over years, abandoned CCTV monitors gradually accumulated in my studio. Through this process, the screens transformed from discarded devices into a collective structure resembling a living building. Each unit became a habitat where a Digital Being continues to breathe, appearing and disappearing through subtle changes of light.
The CRT-like displays do not simply show images; they function as environments where digital entities inhabit and maintain their presence. Like an apartment building, each unit contains an individual existence while contributing to a larger technological organism.
As time-based media artworks face inevitable challenges of hardware failure, software disappearance, and technological transition, Building-I proposes a speculative preservation model for sustaining digital artworks across generations.
The project explores how a digital artwork may remain connected to its original identity while continuously adapting through reconstruction, maintenance, and technological translation.
To support this long-term preservation, each unit is conceived as a bonded pair of physical and digital records: an artwork and its corresponding digital identity. Through blockchain-based provenance systems and Real World Asset (RWA) frameworks, the project investigates how ownership, authenticity, and preservation can extend beyond the lifespan of individual technologies.
The purpose of this system is not commercialization, but continuity—the possibility that Digital Beings may continue to exist, be maintained, and be experienced in the future.
Building-I is not a collection of digital assets. It is an experimental preservation infrastructure for a living archive of Digital Beings.
